Solar Car Experiments on a Sunny Day
We talked about how we could make cars solar and help reduce gasoline usage. But then thought about how much energy solar panels could generate on a real car and what time of day they would generate energy. We weren't sure that solar cars would work well all day and we knew they wouldn't generate energy at night. So we decided to experiment to confirm our hypothesis that a solar car would store more energy and go faster in the middle of the day because the sun would be directly overhead. So, we marked off 10 yards on the street outside and calculated the speed of the solar car at 12:20, 12:40, 1:00, 1:20, 1:40, 2:00, 2:20, and 2:40 (we ran it three times at each time slot and then averaged the speed). Here's what we found: the car was at its fastest speed at 12:20. In 2 hours, the speed of the car dropped 3 seconds. So, guess we were right. The result might have changed though if we changed the angle of the solar panels on the car as the sun went down.
