White Out by H
the colors disappear
fading to white
i wonder
why
how
the smell fills my nose
my hand grabs ahold and pulls
dragging whiteness
hiding the words from all
look closely
can you see?

Mom by T
you are so strong
few times have I seen you stumble
few times have I seen you fall
you are a teacher
that is your place in the world
it is your calling
to teach in many subjects to all who listen
few times have I seen you stumble
few times have I seen you fall
you are a teacher
that is your place in the world
it is your calling
to teach in many subjects to all who listen
First steps by T
she stumbles
looks at me
and smiles
she grabs ahold
of my fingers
and forms a fist
with her pudgy hands
then she takes
one step forward
looks at me
and smiles
she grabs ahold
of my fingers
and forms a fist
with her pudgy hands
then she takes
one step forward
Speed by T
the wind hits my cheeks
like bugs hit a windshield
my legs move
they become one with the pedals
i grip my handlebars
in a death grip
faster and faster
i squeeze the brake
then
i stop.

they become one with the pedals

in a death grip
faster and faster
i squeeze the brake
then
i stop.

Similes
In our cleaning frenzy, we came across November's 30 day project. Wondering what that is? Well, starting in August, each month the girls did a project that was something they had to do every day all month. In August, they did a journal entry a day. In September, they did a photo a day. In October, they did a sketch a day (I think we may have posted some of these). In November, they did a simile a day. We took December off. In January, they have been working on a poem a day. So, here are some of the best of the girls' similes from November.
1. Your house is as clean as a hospital.
2. The sun warmed her like a blanket.
3. Reading books fills me up like a bowl of chili.
4. I was wound up like a coil.
5. The memories flipped through my mind like a slideshow.
6. The shivers moved through me like ice pricks.
7. The memories flashed through my mind like a kaleidoscope.
8. My grandma's face is like the sun on a cloudy day.
9. The tree branches stretched toward me like a mother's arms.
10. The water was as still as glass.
11. Her legs were blotchy like a leopard.
12. The television was a like a magnet.
13. When she squinted, her eyes were like peepholes.
14. Her head spun around like a twister.
15. The array of food made her drool like a bulldog.
16. She was more delicate than a flower.
17. Her lips were red like a fire engine.
18. The clock ticked like a bomb.
19. The paint spread like melting snow.
20. The assignment was as dull as a rainy day.
