Educational Philosophy

Education is a social process. Education is growth. Education is not a preparation for life; education is life itself.

~ John Dewey

Butter and Margarine Experiment

We received an email recently saying that margarine was just one molecule away from plastic and it claimed that if you set a tub of margarine in a dark place that it would not grow anything because it was plastic-like. The email suggested that you should eat butter because it was better for you. We decided to test it out. We placed a tub of margarine with the top on and a tub of butter with the top on in a box on our front porch in the shade. We checked on it after hours and found absolutely nothing. Then, we took them both out of the box and placed them next to each for 24 hours. Again, nothing. Then, we moved them 3 feet away from each other for another 24 hours. Again, nothing. There was one bug in the tub of butter ( a very small bug). There was no visible mold on either one. As you can see, the margarine separated and looked pretty gross. The butter didn't change at all. Interestingly, neither one smelled rancid. The message is probably that we shouldn't eat either of them!
