Educational Philosophy

Education is a social process. Education is growth. Education is not a preparation for life; education is life itself.

~ John Dewey

Our simple educational philosphy: we learn as we live and we celebrate what we learn!

The most dangerous cake

This weekend we tried this:

5 Minutue Chocolate Mug Cake

4 tablespoons flour
4 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons cocoa
1 egg
3 tablespoons milk
3 tablespoons oil
3 tablespoons chocolate chips
a splash of vanilla extract
1 large coffee mug

Add the dry ingredients to mug and mix well. And egg and mix again.
Add chocolate chips and vanilla extract and mix again. Put mug in microwave and cook for 3 minutes at 1000 watts. The cake will rise over the top of the mug but don't be alarmed.

Allow to cool. Eat. And, why is it dangerous?

Because now you are only 5 minutes away from chocolate cake at any time of day or night!

The girls' review: a bit chewy for cake. It was still fun to cook!

Flags, Kitchen and Unplug Your Kids

After a brief break from Unplug Your Kids, we found time this week to knock out two categories of Unplug Your Kids: last week was flags and this week is kitchen. So, to celebrate change, we made flag cupcakes in the kitchen(the girls' cousins helped decorate). I know it's not much. But, at least we participated this week!

Butter and Margarine Experiment

We received an email recently saying that margarine was just one molecule away from plastic and it claimed that if you set a tub of margarine in a dark place that it would not grow anything because it was plastic-like. The email suggested that you should eat butter because it was better for you. We decided to test it out. We placed a tub of margarine with the top on and a tub of butter with the top on in a box on our front porch in the shade. We checked on it after hours and found absolutely nothing. Then, we took them both out of the box and placed them next to each for 24 hours. Again, nothing. Then, we moved them 3 feet away from each other for another 24 hours. Again, nothing. There was one bug in the tub of butter ( a very small bug). There was no visible mold on either one. As you can see, the margarine separated and looked pretty gross. The butter didn't change at all. Interestingly, neither one smelled rancid. The message is probably that we shouldn't eat either of them!

Homemade Tomato Sauce

We planted the seeds from the tomatosphere project in the ground. We have had the largest batch of tomatoes we've ever grown! So, we made some homemade spaghetti sauce. Here are some pictures of our adventure.
