Rural Hill was the home of Major John Davidson. He was a revolutionary war patriot and a signer of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence. The farm was occupied by six generations of the Davidson family for about 230 years. It is now a registered historic landmark. The property contains a reconstruction of the Davidson's home, plantation mansion ruins, a well house, an ash house, a smoke house, gardens, a farm house, a barn (with highland cattle, chickens, and a horse), Bethesda school (the oldest african american schoolhouse in Mecklenburg county), the Davidson schoolhouse and the rural hill burial ground. The property has a fact-finding game that took us about 1.5 hours to complete. It was very fun and educational.
