Yesterday, we got out the girls' paper making kit and made our own paper. We used lint (kind of thick) and shredded paper in the blender for the pulp. Here are some pics. We have a lot of pulp left, so we may make more.
Did you know that no one really knows when paper was first made? Historians do know that it started in China and was made there for several hundred years before reaching Korea and Japan. It is believed that Chinese papermakers were taken in battle and forced to share their craft with their captors. Papermaking spread to the Arab regions and then Europe. The town of Xativa, Spain, was probably the site of the first European paper mill, by 1151. Papermaking then spread to Italy,France, and Germany.
Papermaking did not reach the United States until 1690. William Rittenhouse, a German papermaker who worked in the Netherlands for many years, is known as the first papermaker in the United States.
